Restoring the trunk cover (parcel shelf)

Sadly the rear window has been leaking. So the trunk cover has had a rough time. Time for renewal.

Leaking window leads to bad situations,

But a quick cleaning helps before applying anti-rust primer:

Now, time for the shelf itself. Condition, Molded...

But with new board (DIY market (e.g. Brico 10 EUR), new Fabric (15EUR/meter) at my wife's favorite fabric store in Brussels: Le Chien Vert (green dog) and 10EUR for some foam, for an ordinary bed-store:

Restoration has started, removing headlining

Head lining (the sky), the trunk cover (parcel shelf) (hoedenplank), new card board. The big project has started.
Opening a 40 year old Jag, just brings surprises, I try to look through the 'chaos' and keep my big picture.

New headlining has been order by the Jag parts supplier: SNG Barrat. New headlining, and glue: 150 EUR. Delivered at home.

But first as always: removing the old parts. Easy it seems, but nothing is less-true. All headlining parts are fitted with small clips, just a flat screw-driver behind, and you are done.

Finally home

Fresh from painting, there she is in her new garage box. Paul Soret in Hoeilaart has just done a terrific job. 

The steering wheel, the horn, quick re-build.

The horn was not working, some research showed, the internal connector in the steeringwheel was not connecting, funny enough this is one of the few parts of the jag, that cannot be dissembled.

There she is, getting the first layer, stitching the uneven parts in the paint. In the safe hands of Paul Soret in Hoeilaart. Which appears to be a great choice, he is the(!) expert in Jag's in Belgium. Restoring, and arranging new parts. He himself worked for more than 12 years on Jag's.

Car wash, the first time!

For the first time, she's going through the car wash. Now hope she stays dry (from the inside).

Fuel pump restoration

Don't buy new, just get yourself a new fittings kit. The expert in this area: Burlen Fuel Systems Limited

 

Just make some pictures to ensure, removal = refitting.

Mark the order and clean.

Most complicated is the electrical part, but in 2hrs you are done..

Parking in Brussels

Parking ain't easy, espacially not when being tolled away during a holiday break.

Not cheap, 340 EUR all with all in Brussels.

New bonnet

Well, after the crash in January she needed a new bonnet. Found a good one in the Netherlands, second hand. 100 EUR.

Transporting it was more a challenge,

than installing it:

New leather, interior

35 years sitting in a Jag leaves it marks, time to fix the leather.

Send a sample and pictures of your leather to Gliptone Leathercare Ltd (UK), and for 85 GBP, you will receive a new leather!

Take care the process is much more work than I make it sound....

She's kind a humid....

New cooling piping, easy order: (www.oldtimer-shop.de) for 70EUR and 2 hours work, and all is replaced.

Rattling noise on bumpy roads

Always on bumpy roads or 'drempels' in the front the shock system was making a loud ratling noice.

Easy fix it appeared: two new rubbers (www.oldtimer-shop.de) for 11.70EUR and some effort to open the old shock resistors and it was done.

Change fuel filter

New fuel filter installed with gummy to close, 6.20 EUR

Easy to do, best cut open a plastic can (5liters) and place under. As of then just un-srew and replace filter.

The accident

Driving a Jag in Brussels ain't easy. Jan'2011 it happened:

On this crossing a Renault Kangoo suddenly drove upto the mid-section of the road and breaking was not an option.

AED No more automatic Shoke

Everybody who starts with a 4.2 XJ6 will be most impressed by it's fuel usage. The first 10% can be saved by replacing the automatic shoke or AED.

Just order a couple of simple parts, and add a choke cable.

Her first maintenance

The first garage: Royal park in Laeken, Brussels. Together with father, the Jag went for a good service.

Fine-tuning the ignition timings, and later on also the carburetor settings and fuel usage.

Watch the leaking cooling liquid, coming out, as the cooling pipes appeared to be damaged later.
